“Sweet!” That was Neil McCarthy’s reaction when he heard he’d won a hamper full of traditional confectionery, courtesy of leading franchisor, Driver Hire. Neil, is a transport manager for Preston based-builders’ merchants, C & W Berry Ltd, who are customers of Driver Hire Preston.

He was one of five customers from around the Driver Hire network enjoying a whole host of sweet memories. The other lucky winners were Chris Reeves (DVM Transport, Doncaster), Louise Handforth (Vinyl Compounds, High Peak, Derbyshire), Paul Maxwell (Supaglaze, Stockport) and Martin Dell (Wolseley Climate Center, Barking).

The retro sweet prize draw was all part of Driver Hire’s 30 years in business celebrations. Customers received a mailer recalling some of the major events of the mid-eighties. It also promoted the value of face-to-face meetings and offered customers and other contacts an opportunity to arrange one. As an added enticement, enclosed in the invite was a ‘Wham’ bar, a classic 1980’s fruity chew. Recipients were then invited to nominate their favourite retro sweet and were entered into the free prize draw.

“In the vote for the nation’s favourite retro sweet, Black Jacks came out on top, closely followed by the Curly Wurly,” says Richard Owen-Hughes, Driver Hire’s Group Marketing Director. “It’s been a real trip down memory lane for aficionados of the ‘penny tray’ and ‘pic ‘n mix’. It’s kicked off some great customer conversations. Well over half of our network chose to take part, benefiting from centralised, well researched marketing.  It’s another example of the many benefits of franchising.”
